Turpan is also called Turpan depression, an important city on the ancient silk road, located in the east part of Xinjiang region.Turpan is located in the hinterland of the Eurasian continent. It is the gateway of Urumqi and an important transportation hub of the new Silk Road and the Eurasian Continental Bridge.It was once one of the political, economic and cultural centers in the western regions. More than 200 cultural sites have been found, and more than 40000 cultural relics have been unearthed from prehistory to modern times.
Itinerary
Day 1
Urumqi to Turpan,200km
In the early morning, our guide and driver will meet you at your hotel in Urumqi, then you start traveling to Turpan, Normally it takes about 3hours driving from Urumqi to Turpan(200km). On the way, you will see different landscapes like semi desert, lakes, grassland, dry mountain, sand and stone desert. You will also pass through the biggest wind turbine groups (produce electricity) in China.
By altitude, you will go down about one kilometer. After arriving to Turpan, we will have a lunch at a local restaurant, enjoy from the Uighur cuisine. After lunch, you will visit the Kariz museum (ancient underground irrigation system) and Jiaohe Ancient city, which is the UNESCO site and also best preserved soil structured city ruins in China. After dinner, you may walk around the town. You will find that it is very different from Urumqi and life at the evening is very alive.

Day 2
Turpan to Urumqi
Today, we will visit Emin minaret (mosque and tower was build 18th century), which very close to the town. After the minaret, you will drive all the way to the east to see the famous Flaming mountains, visit the Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves and Tuyuk village. If you interested, you can have a lunch at one of the local farmer’s house, not luxury but the food is quite tasty and experience with locals are good.
After lunch, you will drive back all the way to Urumqi. It is about 250 kilometers from the village.
