Tashkorgan Tajik Autonomous County is one of the counties of Kashgar Prefecture. Tashkorgan is the most western city of ChinaThe total area is 24088.82 square kilometers,.in the eastern part of the Pamir Plateau, where the Kunlun, Karakoram, Hindukush and Tian Shan mountains come together, It is situated at an altitude of 3,090 meters, at the borders with Afghanistan (Wakhan Corridor), Tajikistan (Gorno-Badakhshan Province) and Pakistan (Gilgit-Baltistan). Tashkurgan means Stone Fortress or Stone Tower or Stone castle in Turkic language. Tashkurgan has a long history as a stop on the Silk Road. Major caravan routes converged here leading to Kashgar in the north, Kargilik to the east, Badakhshan and khokhan to the west.and Chitral and Hunza to the southwest inGilgit Baltistan of today’s Pakistan. About 2,000 years ago, During the Han dynasty, Tashkurgan was known as Puli, during the Tang dynasty, it was a protectorate of the Parthians, during the Yuan dynasty it was part of the Chaghatai empire. Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County was created in 1954 and is part of the district of Kashgar.
