The Shipton’s Arch lies about 70 kilometers outside of Kashgar city and it is estimated to be the world’s highest natural stone arch. It's 365 meters, about the height of the Empire State building. It was discovered in 1947 by an English mountaineer Eric Shipton while he was traveling between Tashkent and Kashgar. It was reported by him in his book “Mountains of Tartary.” The arch once figured in the Guinness Book of Records for its exceptional height, but the editors of the book could not locate it exactly so the listing was dropped. It was only as recently as May 2000 that an expedition sponsored by National Geographic finally rediscovered again! This "Tianmen" stands on the Pamirs Plateau, in the shape of "∩", about 100 meters wide and more than 500 meters high. It is a wonderland for tourists and explorers because it is built by nature and cannot be measured. It is not only magnificent and precipitous, but also deep, quiet and mysterious. The blue sky and white clouds set off the top of the mountain. The mountain is in the clouds. The clouds surround the top of the mountain. The mountain is integrated with the sky,and it is very beautiful.
