It is located in center of the Tarim Basin, between Kunlun mountain and Tianshan mountains. Covers an area of 337,600square kilometers, about 1,000km long from east to west and 400km wide from north to south, It is the second largest mobile desert in the world after the Sahara desert in Africa, and also the largest desert in China, with the largest quicksand area in the world. "Taklimakan" means "no coming back after go in" in the Uyghur language, and it is also called the "sea of death". The sand dunes inside the desert are generally 50-80m high, and some can reach over 150m, the dunes are complicated in shapes, containing almost all the dune types in deserts of China. During the day in summer, the sun shines fiercely, making the sand dazzling, and the temperature on the sand surface can reach 70℃ - 80℃. The strong evaporation makes the scenery dim. There are abundant Populus diversifolia forests in Taklamakn Desert, and many rivers flow around the desert, such as Hotan River, Yarkand River, Kashgar River, Aksu River and Kongque River, at the end all the rivers join together and form the Tarim River, which is the longest inland river in China, join to the Lopnur Lake in the northwest of Taklamakan desert, and sink into the desert.
